High school inventors and entrepreneurs from various traditional public and charter schools have spent the better part of June working alongside engineers on product design and processes as they gear up to compete for scholarships in S.Y.STEM’s first Junior Shark Tank.

  • Junior Shark Tank Competition
  • Friday, June 30
  • 3 to 7 p.m.
  • Amethyst Room – Pima Community College Downtown Campus (1255 N. Stone Ave.)

Approximately 25 students have worked in teams with engineers from local industry, including Raytheon, to define a product, create constraints and requirements for their project, perform preliminary and critical design reviews, and build and test their solutions.

The Junior Shark Tank has run Monday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. since June 3 at the JTED @ Star Campus (5093 S. Liberty Ave.). The students’ work culminates when they must pitch their products to a panel of local STEM experts and business leaders for a chance to win $1,000 to $5,000 in scholarships.

S.Y.STEM Coalition was founded in 2014 in an effort to broaden children’s and young adults’ knowledge of the STEM careers and opportunities all around us. Junior Shark Tank sponsors include:

  • Marshall Foundation
  • Pima County One Stop
  • Pima JTED
  • Raytheon
  • Startup Tucson
  • YCC (Youth Career Connect)
