Work with patients in an urgent care clinic, physician’s office and hospital. Collect blood & specimen samples, patient vitals and medical history, set up surgical trays, perform screening for diseases. Learn to greet patients, electronic medical records management, and collecting payments. Employ human relations skills appropriate to the health care setting. Display behaviors of a professional medical administrative specialist. Participate in patient education.

- Semester 1: History of Medical Assisting, Communication, Professional Skills, Administrative Medical Assisting, Telephone Skills, Billing and Coding, Medical Insurance
- Semester 2: Anatomy and Physiology, Clinical Medical Assisting, Safety, Injections, Venipuncture, Wound Care, Specimen Handling, Point of Care testing, Electronic Medical Records, Internship

Other Requirements
- Completed one or more of the following prerequisite courses and passed both semesters with a B or better (JTED HealthCare Foundations, JTED Comprehensive Health Technician, Anatomy/Physiology, Sports Medicine, EMS, Home Health Aide or an alternative prerequisite at your home high school)
- Complete Accuplacer Reading/Math assessment
- Be able to obtain fingerprint clearance card, pass industry required drug testing, and background checks
- Have a Social Security number for clinicals, externships, certifications and licenses
- Must hold current Basic Life Support CPR Certification before start of class

Things to Consider
- You will act as a patient and a MA in this program while learning skills. This means that you will have skills performed on you as well as you being the one to practice the skills, including being given shots and have your blood drawn.
- Attendance is extremely important! Students with more than 24 hours of absences over the course of the year will not be allowed to sit for certification.
- You must have the ability to lift 40 lbs.
- You must have the ability to stand for long periods of time.
- Strong communication skills and compassion for people are necessary.
- You must have the ability to complete medical tasks like using needles and syringes.
- Safely handling urine, feces, saliva, blood, and other body fluid is required.
