Social & Mental Health Technician

Learn to help people care for their mental health. This program introduces you to social work, mental health case work, clinical interviewing techniques, therapeutic intervention strategies, patient testing and evaluation procedures, patient and family counseling, social rehabilitation, patient care planning, record-keeping, and support services liaison activities.


Eligibility

  • Year 1:
    • Grade 11
  • Year 2:
    • Successfully complete Year 1
    • Successfully complete Year 1 certifications

Things to Consider

  1. Prepare for entry-level positions in the social and mental health fields.
  2. You must want to work with people.
  3. Additional education or training required for most careers in the field.
  4. High school graduation required for employment in the field.
  5. Good communication and written skills.
  6. Willingness to help individuals and communities in a variety of areas of community/public health settings.

  • Year 1:
    • Tuesdays & Thursdays 4 to 6:15 p.m.
  • Year 2:
    • Mondays & Wednesdays 4 to 6:15 p.m.
  • Also available Monday through Friday daytime schedule

Program Completion/Sequence

Year 1

Exploring mental health careers and places of work, cognitive and brain development, ethics and cultural impacts, mental health promotion, communication skills, legal ethical and safety requirements

Year 2

Mental health disorders, strategies to improve mental health, communication skills, problem solving skills, legal ethical and safety requirements

Arizona Department of Education Standards

Certification

  • Year 1:
    • BLS CPR
    • Psychological First Aid
    • Be There Certificate
  • Year 2:
    • Mental Health First Aid (must be 18 years old to certify)

Work Based Learning Requirement

Expose students to community organizations through field trips and guest speakers
