Explore the field of Veterinary Medicine and learn to provide patient management, care, and clinical procedures assistance to companion animals as part of our Class Pet Veterinary Clinic team. Expand your knowledge of species and animal welfare through off site clinicals, guest speakers, and field trips.
Eligibility
- Year 1:
- Grade 11
- Beginning Veterinary Assisting Application
- Sports Medicine, HCF or Anatomy & Physiology concurrently are strongly recommended
- Year 2:
- Semester grades (S1 & S2): 70% or higher
- OSHA 10 General Industry (Veterinary) Certification Completion
- Safety Exam Standard met: 100%
- Professional Portfolio Grade: 70% or higher
- Student must have completed and been signed off on all year one skills competency sheets and parents/guardians will be given frequent updates on their progress to ensure they have every opportunity to meet eligibility requirements for advancement into year two of the Veterinary Assisting Program

Things to Consider
- You must have the ability to lift 50 lbs.
- You must have the ability to stand for long periods of time.
- You must have no known allergies to animals or your allergies to animals are managed.
- Strong communication skills and compassion for pet owners are essential.
- You must have the ability to complete medical tasks like using needles and syringes.
- You must have the ability to safely handle urine, feces, saliva, blood, and other body fluids.

- Mondays & Wednesdays 5 to 7:30 p.m. and one Saturday every other month (4 hours)

Year 2 (earn two credits per year):
- Mondays & Wednesdays 2 to 6 p.m. and one Saturday per month (8 hours)

Year 1
Animal Behavior & Handling, Client Communication, Hospital Safety, Medical Records, Animal Care Careers, Anatomy & Physiology, Animal Breeds, Class Pet Clinic Hours minimum 24 hours
Year 2
Advanced Client Communication & Reception, Laboratory Procedures, Pharmacy, Radiology, Surgery, experience in the Class Pet Medical Clinic, Off Site Clinicals, and Off Site Internship

Work Based Learning Requirements
- Year 1:
- Minimum of 20 clinical hours facilitated by JTED during Saturday Skills Days
- Year 2:
- Minimum of 100 clinical hours facilitated by JTED
- Minimum 40 hour clinical experience off site
Students who complete one or more years of the program and meet the eligibility requirements may have the opportunity to participate in our Internship Program.
